CATHERINE PARKER
mixed media artist

About me

I am an Ottawa based mixed media artist. I became an artist in mid life, after I retired from a career in pharmacy. I could no longer ignore the Creative Muse.

I started  by going back to school and  taking courses in fashion design with fashion illustration being my favourite course. It introduced me to painting for the first time, in watercolour. I was fascinated by learning how to draw flamboyant fashion figure poses and it opened me up to the possibility of becoming an artist. After earning my diploma in fashion design, I continued to take painting and drawing courses offered by the city of Ottawa.

In 2017 I took my first 3 month intensive Creative Visionary Pathway program by American artist Nicholas Wilton. The program gave me the tools I needed to pursue a daily art practice and to find my voice as an artist.   I  have also taken workshops with artists Robert Burridge, Holly Dean, Bibby Gignilliat, and Judy Woods.

My creative inspirations come from fairytales, imaginary worlds, architecture and sacred spaces. My work often appears as a narrative, showing a microcosm of the full human experience, both real and surreal, showing hints of a rich past, vibrant present and enchanting future.

My hope is that my art elicits a remembering; a sense of familiarity; a resonance, as well as a feeling of whimsy and otherworldliness, for the viewer.
